Algorithm for autonomous landing site selection of the Phobos-Grunt spacecraft

The landing of the Phobos-Grunt s/c on the surface of Phobos will be supported by real-time processing of the images obtained by the Wide-Angle Camera (WAC) of the Television System for Navigation and Observation (TSNN). In particular, a surface non-homogeneity map will be generated that will be used to estimate suitability for landing of the currently forecasted site and in case it proves unsuitable to direct the s/c to the most flat site in the WAC field of view. The relative radiance dispersion is chosen as the principal non-homogeneity criterion, with additional accounting for shadows and proximity of strong non-homogeneities. The map computation time on camera processors is approximately 0,1 s. The algorithm and the on-board software were tested using high-resolution images of Phobos, Mars and the Moon, as well as of specially designed rough surfaces.
