Large areas of agricultural land in Russia fell out of use because of social and economic crisis in the 1990s. In May 14, 2021, Russian Government issued the Resolution No. 731 concerning a program for the development of the land reclamation complex. According to this program, fallow lands must be returned to agricultural use. However, this requires knowledge of the actual condition of such lands. The first stage of our study was to determine the location and age of fallow areas within the Nadezhdinskaya drainage system in the Jewish Autonomous Region. It was done using visual interpretation of open-access satellite images from the EarthExplorer website (https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/) in ArcMap 10.8. Then eight sample points were selected for arable land, fallow land and background plant communities and for each point, the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) dynamics at the beginning of summer in various years were plotted. The second stage of our study — field studies — was conducted in September 2024. For each trial point, a geobotanical description of vegetation was made. The final stage involved analysis of the dynamics of NDVI and plant community succession of fallow lands. The obtained data show that NDVI grows with fallow land age. The growth is associated with an increase in vegetation density and a change in species composition in the fallow areas.
