In 2020, in the south of the European part of Russia, a critical situation connected with the filling of reservoirs arose as a result of drought and low water levels on the rivers. The most difficult situation was observed on the Crimean Peninsula. After shutting off the supply of the Dnieper water through the North Crimean canal, the problem of acute water shortage arose on the peninsula. At the same time, the network of state hydrological monitoring of reservoirs is poorly developed in Crimea. Only one out of 34 hydrometeorological monitoring stations of the Crimean Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring is located on the reservoir. The State Water Register does not contain the characteristics of the remaining 22 reservoirs. The paper shows the possibilities of using satellite images Landsat, Sentinel-2 obtained over the period of 1984–2020 for monitoring the areas of reservoirs on the peninsula. We have analyzed the dynamics of the areas under study, revealed the relationship between the areas and the values of annual precipitation. The year of 1994 was the driest one: the natural runoff reservoirs were filled up to 20 %. In 1984 and 2020, the area of reservoirs made about 40 % of the project area. The loading reservoirs began to decrease immediately after the cessation of water supply from the canal in 2014, and they are currently filled up to 20 % of the project area. As a result of comparing the volumes and the corresponding areas of reservoirs, we have obtained equations for the relationship of these values. They can be used for estimating water supply on the basis of satellite observations.
