Basic principles of the Russian remote sensed information system for forest biodiversity assessment

The main principles of the Russian remote sensed information system for forest biodiversity and forest ecosystem functions/services assessment were discussed. The forest ecosystem functions and services, criteria and indicators of forest biodiversity that can be estimated on the basis of satellite data were identified. The structure of information system and description of its elements was presented. The satellite operation system was briefly characterized. Requirements for information support system on the the federal, regional and local levels have been formulated.
