The problem of the influence of the earth's surface sphericity on the waveform of the backscattered impulse for a space altimeter with a knife-like antenna beam was investigated. The analytical formula for the waveform of the backscattered impulse in the case of nadir sounding of the sea surface was obtained. The performed numerical estimates have shown that in contrast to the radar with a narrow antenna beam, the waveform of the backscattered impulse, weakly depends on the sphericity of the sea surface for altimeter with knife-like antenna beam for the delay time, which commonly used at the data processing.
Keywords: remote sensing, altimeter, radar with knife-like antenna beam, curvature of the scattering surface, waveform of the backscattered impulse
