Mapping of Russia's vegetation cover using MODIS satellite spectroradiometer data

The paper describes new automated method for vegetation cover mapping based on satellite observation data by spectroradiometer MODIS. The method involves preliminarily cleaned from impact of cloud and other contaminating factors multi-annual time-series of spectral reflectance satellite measurements along with automated land cover types recognition based on a locally-adaptive classification algorithm LAGMA. New vegetation map of Russia developed with mentioned above method has spatial resolution 250 m. The map legend consist 22 thematic classes, including 18 various vegetation types. New map demonstrates higher level of thematic reliability and details in comparison to earlier published satellite data derived land cover maps.
