Spatial-temporal dynamics of Total Electron Content (TEC) disturbances during powerful tropical cyclones (TCs) RITA (18-26 September 2005) and WILMA (15-25 October 2005) were compared with the behavior of the nearground meteorological parameters (pressure, temperature, zonal and meridional wind speed). An increase in the 02-20 and 20-60 min TEC variation intensity was observed over tropical cyclones in quiet geophysical conditions. The TEC variation intensity was higher on the receiver-satellite lines of sight that passed closer to the cyclone. In the 20-60 min variations the TEC response was more intense than in the 02-20 min ones. The mean increase of the long-period (20-60 min) disturbance amplitude, relative to quite conditions, reached 0.7-0.8 TECU. On average, the 02-20 min variations amplitude increased by no more than 0.3-0.4 TECU. The TEC response to TCs RITA and WILMA was much weaker than it was to tropical cyclone KATRINA. The analysis of distributions of temperature, wind, and pressure over the three tropical cyclones has revealed that the cyclone KATRINA was traced up to the height of 12 km; TCs RITA and WILMA, to 8 km. That is why the cyclone KATRINA could have a stronger effect on the ionosphere.
