Algorithm of retrieving the vertical distribution of the atmosphere temperature and humidity has been elaborated. It
is based on comparison of the brightness temperature of the system ocean surface-atmosphere measured by satellite
radiometer SSM/I at microwaves in the millimeter and centimeter wavelength ranges and its simulated estimates
derived from direct meteorological measurements in the near-surface atmosphere and an assumption on exponentially
vanishing with a height the air temperature and humidity. The algorithm was approved with the data of powerful
tropical cyclone KATRINA in the Florida Strait in August 2005.
Keywords: satellite passive microwave radiometric method, (radio)brightness temperature, buoy station, system "ocean surface-atmosphere", tropical cyclone
