Laboratory investigations are presented focusing on the relation of radar contrasts and 8-mm microwave backscatter
Doppler shifts and physical parameters of the films depending on species structure and biomass concentration of
phytoplankton. Experimental studies of formation and evolution of films produced on the sea surface by phytoplankton
cells as a result of an upflow of gas bubbles of small sizes (less than 1 mm) are discussed.
Keywords: remote sensing, phytoplankton, air bubbles, radar contrasts
