The paper provides an overview of the AIS and presents experimental data on the number of vessels equipped with
AIS transponders, plying to the port city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Based on the analysis of information about
the ships' positions stored in the database of Rosrybolovstvo OSM it is shown that the coordinates of the fishing
fleet vessels could be verified by the data of neighboring vessels in not less than 70% of cases. Conclusions are
made about the prospects of using protocols similar to those used by maritime stations and ships' AIS transponders
to tackle IUU fishing. In addition, data sharing of OSM information and that one gathered from the ships' AIS
transponders, can significantly enhance the capability of monitoring system for fishery control of coastal and inland
areas.
