New regional approach to a problem of the atmospheric correction of satellite ocean color data has
been developed and realized for the northern half of the Caspian Sea. The approach consists in a
concurrent retrieval of the aerosol contribution and of the water-leaving radiance by using the
presentation of the above mentioned spectral dependences as linear combinations of several basis
functions; as a result the problem boils down to finding the unknown expansion coefficients. The
systems of basis functions for the water radiance reflectance were derived for the "shallow" and "deep"
data sets measured in situ during the SIO RAS expeditions; the "shallow" system takes into account the
contribution arising from the bottom reflection. Examples of application of the developed algorithm are
given in comparison with in situ measured data and results from the standard algorithm of the
atmospheric correction.
