Scientific significance of the Global Geodetic Observation System
Институт астрономии РАН, 119017, Москва, Пятницкая, 48
Space geodesy techniques, including global satellite navigation systems (GNSS), satellite laser
ranging and others, are the most effective (by the precision and economy) means for the registration of
the faint -power variations of the geophysical and geodynamic parameters. For the first time the quantity
estimations, approving a conception of the global and regional tectonic movements and deformations of
the Earths crust, became possible in short time periods. As well as recording of the small, at the level of
few millimeters, changes of the global sea level and ground water volume variations, that is very
important for the understanding of the climate global changes.
Taking into account the valuable contribution of the space geodesy techniques into the global studies
of the planet Earth state and evolution, the International Association of Geodesy made a resolution on
developing of the integrated geodetic global observation system- GGOS, consisted of different types of
modern ground and space measurement facilities and special satellites.
