Global warming leads to an increased supply of suspended particulate matter to the Arctic seas. Satellite monitoring based on algorithms validated by in situ data enables reliable observation of these changes. The paper presents regional algorithms for estimating suspended particulate matter concentration in the upper layer of the Laptev Sea using remote sensing data. The quality and reliability of the algorithms are ensured by using the results of shipborne measurements of suspended matter concentration and remote sensing reflectance carried out in 2015, 2017, and 2018. Modeling based on hydro-optical measurements in areas of the sea with different contents of colored dissolved organic matter and suspended particulate matter allowed us to select the best algorithm for determining the backscattering coefficient of suspended matter. The QAA (Quasi-Analytical Algorithm) provides a relative retrieval accuracy of 18–22 %. The resulting algorithms for estimating suspended matter concentration are based on in situ measurements of seawater reflectance spectra, thereby avoiding errors associated with atmospheric correction. Validation using Level-2 and Level-3 data from the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) satellite ocean color scanners showed that the proposed formulas provide estimates of suspended matter concentration with a relative error of 30–45 % when the time interval between satellite and in situ measurements does not exceed one day. The absolute errors of the algorithms for retrieving suspended matter concentration from satellite data were evaluated. For the areas adjacent to river mouths, the root mean square error amounts to about 5 mg/L. In more transparent waters, with suspended matter concentrations below 0.35 mg/L according to direct measurements, the root mean square error drops to 0.1 mg/L.
