On the basis of a comprehensive analysis of satellite data on sea surface temperature, ARGO drifter data and SKIRON atmospheric modeling results the decrease in surface layer temperature by more than 10 °C observed in the northeastern part of the Black Sea in late September and early October 2017 was examined. Such anomalies can play an important role in the exchange processes between surface and subthermocline waters. As a result of wind stress, the mixed layer, according to ARGO data, sunk to 24 m, and the core of the cold intermediate layer moved 14 m up to a depth of 30 m. A joint analysis of vertical temperature profiles and wind stress vorticity showed that the main role in temperature change was played by vertical movements (Ekman pumping). Water rise velocities calculated from tangential stress vorticity reached 4.2 m per day. Estimated by the change of vertical velocities, taking into account the vertical distribution of temperature, the time course of the mixed layer temperature is well consistent with the one observed from Meteosat SEVIRI (Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager) data.
