Currently, long-term archives of various types of Earth observation satellite data are widely used to address a variety of research and applied problems. Rapid development of Earth observation systems is leading to a radical increase in the volume of such archives, making it increasingly urgent to find new solutions that would reduce data storage requirements without compromising their applicability in research and practical use. The paper is devoted to the ongoing optimization of the archives of IKI-Monitoring Shared Use Center using a new method of satellite images adaptive compression based on the LERC (Limited Error Raster Compression) algorithm with adjustable loss. The method guarantees preservation of image texture by using statistical analysis to select the compression error for different classes of the underlying surface in each specific image, while simultaneously achieving sufficiently high compression ratios — approximately 0.6 relative to lossless-compressed data. Performing this optimization solely on the MSI (Multispectral Instrument) L1C data in IKI-Monitoring archives will free more than 1.2 PB of used storage space, which corresponds to approximately a five-year time series of such data.
