On the night of 5 to 6 June 2023, the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station — the lowest along the Dnieper River — was damaged, causing an increase in water levels downstream and a decrease in water levels in the Kakhovka Reservoir. The use of high spatial resolution satellite data from Landsat-8, -9 enabled the identification of flooding zones and the scale of the Reservoir bed drying up. As a result of the water level rise of more than 5 meters in the lower bay of the Kakhovka Reservoir, flooding and inundation occurred on a total area of at least 36 thousand hectares, of which about 2 thousand hectares belong to settlement areas and 670 hectares — to buildings and infrastructure. The settlement areas of Belogrudovo, Alyoshkino, Golya Pristan, and the city of Kherson were most affected. The consequences of the dam destruction led to a reduction in the area of the Kakhovka Reservoir by almost half — from 209.1 to 109.9 thousand hectares.
