The paper describes the method of obtaining statistically reliable description of directions that are presented in the relief structures of the studied territory and how these directions correspond to each other. The LESSA (Lineament Extraction and Stripe Statistical Analysis) software is used, in which DEM analysis begins with detection of the axes of ridges and valleys, hereinafter referred to as “stripes”. Statistics of stripes direction are calculated in the sliding window. These statistics are shown in rose diagrams. Then the direction and degree of elongation of the rose diagrams is determined. The paper presents the results of rose diagrams testing. Those results confirm that in measuring the direction of terrain structures using LESSA, there are no errors associated with the preferential assignment of certain directions to stripes. We consider the general description of the direction of relief structures using the global rose diagram of strikes, using the “elongation rose” and “elongation lines”. It is noted that the most informative description of the orientation of relief structures is given by elongation lines. We analyze the possibility of using the rose diagram of extended lineaments for presenting direction statistics, which are automatically built from stripes in LESSA. It is proved that though individual analysis of these lineaments is reliable at the same time the rose-diagram of lineaments with equal “manifestation” threshold is not statistically valid. An example of multi-scale analysis of the directions of valleys and ridges for a section of the pre-Baikal region is given.
