On July 18, 2019, at the border of the Far Eastern Marine Biosphere State Nature Reserve, the research vessel Akademik Vladimir Kasyanov sank. As a result of the accident, more than 4.5 thousand liters of summer diesel fuel was discharged forming an oil spot of one square kilometer on the surface of the sea. Assisted by favorable hydrometeorological conditions, the spill was eliminated on July 20 by the specialists of A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology FEB RAS. The satellite image taken on July 19 at 02:07 UTC by Sentinel-2A made it possible to assess the scale and nature of the oil slick drift in the first hours after the discharge. The radar image taken July 22 at 21:21 UTC by Sentinel-1B confirmed the official announcement on the elimination of oil pollution.
