According to preliminary estimates for the end of October 2019, burnt forest area during this fire season is close to 10 million ha. The paper notes that burnt forest areas reached or exceeded 10 million ha only thrice since the beginning of regular uniform forest fire observations in 2000: in 2003, 2012 and 2018. Attention is drawn to the fact that 2018 and 2019 burnt forest areas are nearly the same. For the first time since 2000 such high fire frequency occurs for the second year in a row. Also, no similar cases of two consecutive years of high fire frequency were recorded over the whole period of forest fire observations in the XX century (more than 50 years), thus making 2019 situation unique. The paper provides the first results of its analysis and comparison with 2018. Among other facts, the information on forest fire area dynamics in protected (aviation and ground control zones) and non-protected (other zones) territories is provided. It is shown that the major contribution to the burnt areas was made by fires in non-protected (hard to access) territories. Also, the burnt area in the protected territories kept lower than the long-term average annual value for quite a long period in the 2019 fire season and reached the average only in the middle of the season but did not exceed it. The paper reports a substantial increase in fire breakout points in the hard-to-access territories during the last decade.
