The eruption of Chirinkotan volcano in 2017 according to Himawari-8 satellite data

The Kurile Island arc is a region of current volcanic activity manifestation: within the island land there are 36 active and potentially dangerous volcanoes. Ash clouds and emissions represent a serious threat to airlines passing along the Kurile Islands and the population living in close proximity to active volcanoes. For the vast majority of volcanoes, there are no visual observations and seismic monitoring data. Due to the inaccessibility of volcanoes, satellite data are currently the most effective and informative monitoring method. Since 2014, Sakhalin volcanic eruptions response team (SVERT) staff has been using satellite data from the information system VolSatView that began to receive data from the geostationary satellite Himawari-8 in 2016. This report contains data on the short-term explosive eruptions of the Chirinkotan volcano (Chirinkotan Island, Northern Kurile Islands), which were recorded only by Himawari-8 satellite data, other satellite images of medium resolution used by SVERT did not show any signs of volcanic activity (except for the March 31 event). Precursors of eruptions in the form of thermal anomalies were not recorded in any of the episodes examined.
