This paper investigates the riverbed deformations occurred in the middle reaches of the Amur River between Ekaterino-Nikolskoye village and Khabarovsk in the past 30 years and estimates areas of these deformations. We perform segmentation of the riverbeds on Landsat images and compare the resulting riverbed masks obtained from images captured in different years. For segmentation of the riverbeds, we use a combination of multichannel spectral indices and a classifier based on the decision tree. The classification results then undergo the stage of verification and possible manual correction by an operator. As a result of the processing, we created color-coded images, each of which represents an overlay of a satellite image and obtained contours of the riverbed, together with actual data of measurements at hydrological posts. We calculated the areas of the deformations, compared the results and analyzed possible causes of the changes. We also picked up high-resolution satellite images for regions with maximal changes demonstrating shore protection works produced by the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation. The obtained results are important for revealing the morphometric changes on the sections of the unstable riverbed of the Amur River caused by the noticeable dynamics of the fairway shift at the border sections of the river.
