The paper is devoted to the history, current status and prospects of the telecommunication node Cosmos established on the basis of the Space Research Institute RAS. The capabilities of the node are considered as well as its role in the Earth remote sensing projects data processing. A special attention is paid to the relevant projects aimed to improve the quality of involved network services. They are mainly aimed at increasing transparency of network resource usage as well as resolving performance problems of data transfers across long-distance wan links. Altogether the mentioned efforts allow the Cosmos network node to be more effective as a transport hub for applications dealing with Earth remote sensing data acquisition and processing.
Keywords: the Cosmos node, network history, telecommunications, data transfer
