The paper discusses the feasibility issues of using hyperspectral (HS) remotely sensed data for studying various processes occurring on water surface. A brief analysis covers the capabilities of several currently functioning HS systems, including their data availability for research purposes. The main focus is on the development aspects of the HS data processing subsystem in the framework of the See the Sea (STS) information system. The STS system has been developed to provide the specialists studying various processes in the world ocean with access to satellite data. Along with querying and selection of data required for research, the system provides the scientists with various data analysis tools. The STS system was designed to allow distant collaboration of separated research teams in framework of various scientific projects. The basic functionality of the HS data processing subsystem of STS is demonstrated by a comparison of water surface state assessment capabilities of Hyperion hyperspectrometer and OLI-TIRS multispectrometer installed on board the Landsat 8 satellite.
Keywords: remote sensing, hyperspectral satellite data, geoportals, water surface remote monitoring
