Estimation of forest damage from natural disasters in Perm region using the long-term series of space imagery
1 Perm State National Research Univercity, Perm, Russia
The article analyzes the damage caused by natural disasters (forest fires, squalls and tornadoes) to forest resources of the Perm Region in the period from 2001 to 2013. The long-term series of satellite imagery LANDSAT were used for the detection of windfalls and burned areas. The method of detection is based on short-wave vegetation index (SWVI). The validation of results of automatized interpretation is performed using the satellite images of high and very high resolution (SPOT-5 and WorldView-2).
More than 50 thousand hectares of forest areas destroyed by forest fires, squalls and tornadoes are identified. This is 0,4% of the total forest area in Perm Region. In the period from 2001 to 2013, the damage caused by forest fires was significantly higher than the damage caused by squalls and tornadoes. The spatial-temporal distribution of forest fires and windfalls in Perm region is analyzed. The zone of high frequency of forest fires is identified. Its formation is caused by natural factors. Several zones of forest damage caused by tornadoes are found. This allows us to revise the existing estimates of the frequency of occurrence of this dangerous phenomenon in the study area. A selective estimation of species and age structure of forest destroyed by fires and windfalls is performed.
