Preliminary study results of the F-scattering phenomenon based on ionosonde DPS-4 data for Moscow

The main characteristics of ionosonde DPS-4 with hardware selection of polarization and measurement of the arrival angles of radio waves are presented. Some results of regular ionosphere observations carried out in the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism and Radio Wave Propagation RAS from 2008 to 2013 are discussed. It is noted that the capability of DPS-4 to measure the arrival angles of the scattered radio waves distinguishes it from most ionosondes used for the study of the F-scattering phenomenon, allowing to localize in the space the scattering region. New measurements with DPS-4 confirmed the previous regularities in the behavior of the ionosphere acquired by means of ionosondes AIS, including the laws of F-scattering occurrence. The diurnal probability of F-scattering in the winter season of 2012–2013 is compared with the data obtained during the winter season of another maximum of solar activity – 1979–1980. The probability of occurrence of F-scattering acquired by means of DPS-4 is significantly higher than that obtained earlier with AIS. Two possible reasons for this difference are discussed: the difference in solar activity and the difference in hardware characteristics of the ionosondes used.
