In order to investigate the ice-thermal regime features of the Lake Hovsgol for 1998 through 2012 satellite remote sensing data have been used in this research. Remote sensing is known to be very useful in studies of water bodies like the Lake Hovsgol with huge surface area of 2760 sq. km.
The investigation concentrates mainly on the estimation of the intra-annual and inter-annual variability of water surface temperature and snow-ice cover melting and destruction on the Lake Hovsgol.
For the period from 1998 till 2012, surface temperature charts and snow-ice melting and destruction charts were compiled using AVHRR data.
Since variability and trends in lake ice dynamics are determined by climate conditions, the relation of Lake Hovsgol ice regime parameters with characteristics of atmospheric circulation was considered.
Also, this study has shown the impact of the different timing of opening and clearance of ice on surface temperature distribution of the lake during ice-free period.
Keywords: Lake Hovsgol, AVHRR data, ice-thermal regime, inter-annual variability, North Atlantic Oscillation
