Automatic estimation of cloud cover and precipitation parameters obtained by AVHRR NOAA for day and night conditions
Planeta State Research Centre of Space Hydrometeorology, Moscow, Russia
A complicated threshold method of automatic pixel-by-pixel classification of AVHRR NOAA data separates cloud and cloud-free pixels and determines precipitation and weather disaster areas of various intensity for day and night all year round conditions in temperate zones above land, water, snow. The method utilizes empirically derived equations and additional data of air temperature vertical distribution and atmosphere pressure at sea level. The method was tested on the satellite, climatological and ground-based meteorological and radar data archived for the region 46.7–63.0°N, 20.0–51.3°E in 1998–2011. The assessments of all derived cloud parameters show a good correlation with the average climatological and WMO estimations as well as with radar and meteorological cloud and precipitation ground-based observations. The method can be efficiently used for cloud, precipitation and disaster real-time observation and climatic investigation.
