The Development and Status of the Distributed System for Satellite Data Acquisition and Processing for Siberia and the Far East

This paper describes an important infrastructure project of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The project is to develop an information system to provide researchers with timely access to Earth sensing data and information products based on it. We discuss techniques for product generation, their catalogization, archiving and storage that employ powerful computing infrastructure of the Siberian Branch. The specific problem considered in the paper is not restricted to remote sensing data but also applies to data coming from other sources that is necessary for Earth systems monitoring. The project builds upon the existing telecommunications basis of the Scientific Data Network of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences that is one of the largest scientific computer networks in Russia.
