The paper is devoted to discussion of up-to-date approaches and technology arrangement of Earth observation data applications aimed to solve scientific tasks. The work is based on analysis of operational Earth remote sensing systems and their data application technologies. Results of application particular properties analysis are given. Revealed problems of fast Earth observation (EO) information systems (IS) development during the last decade are discussed. The analysis is resulted in formulation of general EO IS requirements which should ensure integrated (cooperative) solutions of a wide range of tasks using remote sensing data within a distributed network (infrastructure) of scientific centers. The paper presents a review of existing Russian technologies and infrastructures which can become the basic ones for advanced information systems for satellite data application for scientific projects. Also, the development priorities for such systems are given.
