Opportunities To Work With Long-Term Archive Of LANDSAT Satellite Data On The Territory Of Russia And Neighboring Countries

This article describes the capabilities of the system developed by the Space Research Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAN) for work with LANDSAT satellite data. The paper describes the architecture and main features of the system for maintenance and use of long-term archive of LANDSAT satellite data for Russia and neighboring states. The archive hosted at Space Research Institute contains information for the period from 1989 to present time, and it is constantly updated with the historical and operational data obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS LANDSAT Global Archive). As of August, 2012 the archive provides direct access to more than 200,000 scenes, thus allowing rapid data selection and analysis. A set of Web-interfaces has been developed to facilitate online selection and analysis of satellite data. The experts leading various scientific and non-profit projects benefit from free access to archives and interface analysis. The article describes the experience of using the system in a variety of scientific and application projects.
