Iinternal gravity vortices in atmosphere with zonal wind

The effect of shear of zonal winds on the dynamics of nonlinear internal gravity waves in the Earth's atmosphere is investigated. Closed system of nonlinear equations describing these waves is derived. A condition for the existence of solitary vortices in the atmosphere with shear zonal wind is obtained. It is shown that in the atmosphere with zonal shear wind the horizontal velocity of the vortices can be substantially smaller than the sound speed.
